What is alcohol abuse? Alcohol abuse is a health issue. It is characterized by a maladaptive pattern of drinking alcohol that results in negative work, medical, legal, educational, and/or social effects on a person's life. The individual who abuses this substance tends to continue to use it despite such consequences.
As of 2009, the prevalence of current alcohol use and of binge drinking among high school students was 41.8% and 24.2%, respectively.
Youth exposure to alcohol marketing should also be reduced by lowering the voluntary industry standard governing the placement of alcohol advertising from the current 30% threshold to 15%, based on the proportion of the audience that is age 12-20 years.
The highest prevalence of binge drinking was linked to young adults that are between the ages of 18 and 25, with the peak rate occurring at age 21.
