According to a study that was conducted by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), increasing the difficulty in obtaining alcohol has been determined to reduce alcohol abuse but not in cases of long term alcoholism.
It has been estimated by the Addiction Science Research and Education Center (ASREC) that almost 6% of the population in the United States are alcohol dependent; this is roughly 18 million people.
