In 1984, when federal law changed the drinking age to 21, more than half of fatal crashes among drivers aged 15 to 20 were alcohol related. By 1994, after the new law had been in effect, that number had dropped to 22 percent.
An estimated 1 in 3 college students (3 in 5 frequent binge drinkers) meets the criteria for alcohol abuse while 1 in 17 (1 in 5 frequent binge drinkers) qualify for alcohol dependence.
New research has concluded that even though men are much more likely than women to develop alcoholism, women's health suffers more, even at lower levels of consumption.
According to a study by the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, males comprise the largest majority of all drivers that are involved in fatal car crashes in the United States.
